Our beloved banyan tree has welcomed generations to Crossroads. Many a heart was wrenched recently when she toppled. But the space that she cleared with her graceful fall allows for a new welcome in a new century—perhaps a single tree, a grove, even an intentional meditation space. Funds will help us plan, plant and maintain our sacred gateway to Crossroads.

The pandemic helped us realize digital technology’s importance in the 21st Century. Our nimble response has enhanced our ministry and broadened our reach well beyond Hawaiʻi. Upgrading our wifi and audiovisual systems to unify our gathering spaces—the Sanctuary, Weaver Hall, Ross Davis, the Courtyard, and Zoom—will improve the delivery of our mission, not only for worship services, but also for community events on our campus.

100 years ago, young people from Mid-Pacific and McKinley high schools fulfilled their vision of creating an intentionally interracial church. That same spirit is behind Crossroads’ new Center for Social and Environmental Justice, a bridge to diverse, progressive groups celebrating our Peace and Justice mission. Funds for this project will renovate Scudder Makai as a welcoming space of forward thinkers, spiritual journeyers, and energized activists.

In 1935 when the Crossroads cornerstone was laid, there was no freeway. From our roof one could see all the way to Waikiki, and University Avenue was just two lanes. Tradewinds cooled our place of worship then, but now our sanctuary is much warmer. While air conditioning would help, we are a green congregation that values architectural integrity. We want to use new technology to cool our gathering place without A/C.

The sounds of an organ and carillon have been essential to this church’s life for decades. Sadly, airborne salt has wreaked such havoc on our organ’s digital components that it needs to be replaced along with the carillon. Music is an important part of Crossroads. A new organ and carillon will bless Sunday’s worshippers while extending our 100-year-old joyful song to the broader community.
